Which kind of singer are you? And which songs should you sing?

17/01/2018

"To know oneself, is above all, to know what one can sing!" (or something of that nature!). At the start of a new year, take some time to identify the type of singer you are. Here are some singer types, along with song suggestions, to help you have the karaoke of your life!

The Belter

You’ve been described as a loud mouth and the sheer power in your voice force others to take note. You’ll choose pop, broadway musicals and Disney over country or jazz any day. You combine your chest and head voice with ease to create a pleasant-sounding yell.

Famous belters: Céline Dion, Whitney Houston, Christina Aguilera
Songs to try: Since U Been Gone, Wrecking Ball, I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing, Let It Go

The Raspy Rocker

Your hoarse voice isn’t reserved for just after you wake up. The scratchy sounds that you emit charm and mesmerize your listeners. A voice like yours is few and far between and while singers can (dangerously) imitate the sound, there’s nothing like the real thing!

Famous raspy rockers: Janis Joplin, Stevie Nicks, Rod Stewart
Songs to try: Betty Davis Eyes, What a Wonderful World, With A Little Help From My Friends

The Vibrato Vocalist

Your vocal chords just can’t help playing catch with volume and pitch and you enjoy that extra special ending in your song rendition. A tip from the experts: take care not not to force vibrato, it can can strain your voice and can leave your karaoke rendition seeming fake.

Famous vibrato vocalists: Beyoncé, Adele, Alicia Keys
Songs to try: Hello, Empire State of Mind

The One-Note Wonder

You can easily switch from shrilling like a teenie-bopper who's just spotted Justin Bieber and a deep-gut based scream of a rocker. Simply put, you hit the highs and lows without struggling like an over-hopeful The Voice contestant. You've got range (fancy lingo for the number of notes you hit). An added skill, you can hold your breath for long periods of time making scaling up and down that much more impressive.

Famous one-note wonders: Mariah Carey, Axl Rose, Freddie Mercury
Songs to try: Take On Me, Emotions, Bohemian Rhapsody

The Showman

You can’t help busting a move when the time comes. You believe the show is as important as the music and you're ready to shimmy and shake at the first note.

Famous showman Michael Jackson, James Brown, Shakira
Songs to try: Jump Around, Moves Like Jagger, You Cant Hurry Love, Get Up Offa That Thing, Can’t Stop That Feeling
